Trail overview
This guided trail follows the current official PR07SMI route to Pico da Vara, the highest point on São Miguel, at 1,103 metres. Set in the eastern and oldest part of the island, this mountain landscape is more eroded, rugged and deeply cut by ravines, creating one of the most distinctive natural areas of São Miguel.
The route crosses the Protected Area for the Management of Habitats and Species of Tronqueira and Planalto dos Graminhais and the Nature Reserve of Pico da Vara. Along the way, the trail passes through cryptomeria forest, upland vegetation, panoramic viewpoints and habitats of major conservation - this is the only place on Earth where you can, with luck, see and hear the Azorean bullfinch or Priolo (Pyrrhula murina).
This is a rewarding hike for guests looking for a more demanding mountain experience, with wide views over nordeste, Povoação and the volcaninc landscapes of eastern São Miguel.
